liberal like Christ

What I find so troubling about the so called republican evangelical right is that they and their policies bare no resemblance to the Jesus of the Bible. Maybe Je’sus Rockefeller, the Puerto Rican shortstop but not Jesus the Christ. Every time I go to Church and listen to sermons and study the life and teachings of Jesus I cannot reconcile it with today’s political evangelicals. I don’t recall Jesus ever endorsing tax cuts for the wealthiest among us while at the same time taking resources from the poor. As a matter of fact fifteen percent of everything Jesus talked about concerned material possessions and wealth and how it caused separation from God and prevented one from entering the Kingdom. I don’t recall an intolerant Jesus railing against homosexuals and prostitutes and trying to enact laws to force discrimination against them. I don’t remember Jesus encouraging his country to start unprovoked wars and kill tens of thousands of innocent civilians against countries that did not attack them. It is ponderous how many Christians today have such a skewed view of what Jesus’ ministry was all about. I know many of today’s politicians use religion and wedge moral issues in order to gain the evangelical vote but how ignorant to they really think we are? Do you really think Jesus would be a right wing evangelical republican in today’s America? Do you think he would be reviled by being called a liberal and wanting to help the least of those in our society? Do you think he would heap more debt on the poor in order to give even more cash to the rich? Do you think he would steal from the Social Security retirement trust funds in order to finance endless tax cuts for the wealthy while at the same time burdening the children of today with future deficits and tax INCREASES? Not the Jesus in my Bible. I can’t find the right wing Jesus in my Bible. How do right wing republican evangelicals balance their worship of Jesus Christ with the reality of present day republican policies? Think about that this Easter Sunday. What takes priority in your life, Christ or partisan politics and wealth? I think republican evangelicals have already spoken.
